Hi It's Dan Dunleavy here. Sick for the past week and just well enough to manage sitting through the MLS Super Draft today.
Feel free to offer up your thoughts on Toronto FC's direction in the wake of trading Chad Barrett today to the LA galaxy for future considerations.
Toronto used its first pick in the draft, 26th overall to take U of Cal right back Demetrius Omphroy. 5 10" 170lbs. Can run up and down the wings efficiently. TFC needs that skill.
Remember who TFC relied on last year in HIscanovic and Usanov in that spot.
I agree. I worry about who scores for Toronto FC this season, but I have to trust there is a plan in place. Scoring was a huge concern last season and it remains one in my eyes with Chad gone and DeRo's status muddy.
I was impressed by Barretts efforts and maturation not only as a player but as a person. Being on the road with him the past two seasons he grew last season and at 25, did so without much veteran leadership at his position.
Yes Chad was a 300-thousand dollar ticket and for that reason and just seven goals, this move was expected by many.
Like many Toronto sports teams, overpaid average players. I think Chad would have been a good player to hang onto and continue to grow with but, at his salary I guess it is just not a fit.
Does this sound like another MLSE owned team unfortunately. New GM's having to deal with a previous GM's contracts in order to move the team forward. Lets hope the new group have an eye for some offence somewhere.
Great minds Robbo...
Word is LA is having trouble signing Angel, so they pick up Barrett to ensure some offence with Buddle now gone.
Still waiting for a trade by TFC or we wait for the next pick #43 and 44 overall. vancouver is on the clock.
Mississauga Curtis Ushedo, a Defender at UAB is still available.
Philadelphia Union supporters group very vocal and bringing the energy to the draft!
Word is he is versatile. Can run the wing well. Not big at 5'10", he is an outside back. So his speed and ability to track north and south is needed in Toronto.
Have to think any players taken beyond the top ten are going to be "hopeful" at best.
After all you are balking for the most part about US college players. They have to be real good to have a chance at being a big impact player. For TFC in this draft they are looking for pieces of a bigger puzzle. The rebuild is on with Barrett gone and who know's what DeRo's thinkikng right now.
Got to think Stefan Frei is happy to have a Cal pal coming to the mix but also i know keepers, they want to see someone scoring ahead of them to take some of the heat off them to make game saves almost every night.
I have to think this game plan has been in Toronto FC's playbook for some time since last season ended. I know for a fact some people with TFC saw this season starting without Barrett and DeRo was a question mark because of what happened last season between he and management.
TFC on the clock now for pick #2 of three. Toronto will pick back to back here. 43 and 44.
TFC select From The Ohio state, Midfielder Matt Gold. A stay at home midfielder. Huh?
TFC's last pick of the draft coming up next. Does this mean DeGuzman is on the outs?
TFC pick coming up...
TFC select Midfielder Junior Bergos. Toronto passes on local defender Oshedo at UAB.
Junior is said to be a technical player.
Bergos can play right or left side, a slower player, good ball deleivery. Dad plays for El Salvador national team.
You have to think the Dutch crew have offencive players in mind to bring over to Toronto. Otherwise I am going to start shooting balls from the play by play booth!!!
I think DeGuzman on a better team is a better player. Not what you want to hear about a 1.l7-million dollar player i know. But fact is, there was not much around for DeGuzman to work with, to feed on and off of to build through the midfield.
