MLB Orioles at Jays March 27th
Miked Up LIVE
- Good afternoon, everyone! We have been waiting to get started because home plate ump Vic Carapazzo had a bad back, so he had to be replaced. The Jays and Orioles will play with a three-man crew today, but we're about to get underway. Let's talk baseball!
- what happennd on bunt play yesterday where Bautista left 3B early on throw from Lind?
- Hey Mike! I have a question for you. I know we have three closing options this year in Dotel, Francisco, and Rauch, actually four if you consider Frasor. It was basically the same last year. I guess my question is Mike, are the Jays ever going to go out and get a legitimate closer, in other words, just one, instead of a committee of setup relievers with closer capabilities? If so, do they get it from the farm ( maybe Roenicke?) or from next years ridiculous free agent class of closers? What is your opinion?
- Cameron, we think Bautista thought it was a force, not sure though. That's what spring training is for. Brent, I think the Blue Jays absolutely want to develop a long-term, lights-out type closer, but they're willing to go year to year until they do.
- Hi Mike. I have a question for you. You think the Jays will make the playoffs?
- Do they have that type of spectacular future-closer-like arm in the farm system?
- Kevin, no, I don't. Brent, I'm sure they do - you never know who is going to spring up and take it. Could be Zach Stewart, could be Henderson Alvarez, could be someone out of nowhere.
- thanks mike. I'd be curious about that because he came off the bag so he wouldn't have made the force out. it seemed like he thought the throw was too off line or weak to tag the guy in time so he bailed on it and gave himself a chance to get the out at first, which he did
- You always want the best pitchers, but do you really think a designated closer is necessary? 9th inning situations are normally pretty low leverage, the closer role just seems so strange to me.
- Cameron, it's definitely worth investigating. Geoff, it doesn't seem strange to the big leaguers. True or not, there's a widespread belief among the players, coaches and managers that the last three outs of a ballgame are the toughest to get.
- Read from Lott today that the Jays have their runners broken down into Green, Yellow and Red as far as stolen bases go. Safe to assume that the green group is pretty small? Like Davis and... Davis?
- Mike, do you see Rivera staying in the 6th spot over EE (while keeping Snider at 7)?
- Davis and Corey Patterson, I would suggest, are the only Blue Jays who have the green light. I don't see Rivera staying in the 6th spot long-term.
- @Read today that Farrell As far as stolen bases are concerned, obviously yes Davis is one of the few in the green group. but you forget the fourth outfielder, regardless of whether it is Podsednik or Patterson, both can fly.
- Mike, over under 85 wins this year?
- Vegas says the over/under is 77 1/2.
- as far as wins are concerned, my guess is 86-89
- I have a feeling that R. Davis could have a real nice year, who are your breakout players. Another one would be Snider.
- Tons of breakout candidates...both at the plate & the mound
- Hey, everybody - say hi to Fayzo! He's going to be the Blue Jays producer this season, taking over for K-Rod, and is going to kick some serious butt around here.
- @NewfieMike...MLB restrictions, sorry man.
- Hey Mike are you staying down in Florida for the next three games.
- Much better number than last year's 71. That was easy money.
- @Read today that Farrell and... That was nuts, 71 wins.
- do you think Rajai Davis can steal 50 bases again this year?
- I'm coming home after tomorrow's game.
- @Bluejayfanbrent 50 would be awesome...attempts/steals ratio is important too don't you think?
- Why is the organization so reluctant to make the necessary investment in real grass at the Dome? It's ridiculous this hasn't been done yet. The 80's astroturf experiment is over. As a fan, watching the sun bounce light off the carpet on a hot summer afternoon is a complete joke. Surely a drainage system could be installed during an off season
- Mike, would you expect Mike McCoy to have the green light too?
- Yeah, I would. Good call.
- @Frank the Tank Nothing like Veterans Stadium in Philly...Now that was an AWFUL field
- I would be much happier with 35 steals but at a 85% + rate with the power of this team there is no reason to run into outs.
- @Andrew Any new type of stats you know of for baserunning?
- @Frank the Tank Rogers Centre doesn't have proper drainage system to do that - it's impossible, that's why they haven't.
- The turf really isn't that bad.
- nothing im aware of other than breaking down run probability with a guys CS% but thats more math than im willing to do on a Sunday
- Hoping there's nothing physically wrong with Cecil regarding his lack of velocity, but jimmy key and tom glavine did okay not pounding 90+ fastballs.
- If Aaron Hill under performs once again this year, are his days numbered with the Jays?
- By the way, Yunel Escobar just hit a prodigious blast to left-centre for a two-run homer to give the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead. Escobar, Bautista, Encarnacion, Arencibia and a few others play a game during batting practice called Si or No - that was definitely a Si!
- I don't like the back end of the bullpen right now. What do you expect out of Rauch this year Mike? I know the jays have bullpen depth, but will their bullpen be effective?
- @Bluejayfanbrent It's definitely a big year for Hill.
- @Brent: I would put my money on this being a determining year for Hill and his future with the Jays.
- Anyone else think you'd be selling low by dealing Hill after a poor year?
- Hi Mike, what do you make of Brad Emaus? He hit .272/.402/.434 in 170 AB in AA and .298/.395/.495. in AAA. With the lack of immediate depth at 2B/SS position, why did you think AA decide to leave him unprotected (makeup, true talent, etc.) ?
- I'm assuming they weren't especially comfortable with his defense in the middle.
