MLB Jays at Yankees March 19th
Miked Up LIVE
- Let's talk some baseball, folks!
- We're underway in Tampa - Blue Jays and Yankees! It's been an exciting spring and it's great to get everyone together to talk baseball. Say hello to Gord Brunt, our faithful producer!
- Jays go down in order to start the game against Freddy Garcia and the Yankees.
- Brett Lawrie tested to his left - makes a diving try on a Jeter grounder and knocks the ball down, but it kicks off his glove into short left-centre for a hit.
- 13 days 'till opening day!!
- Two questions about pitchers. Jo Jo Reyes, going to be traded? Any shot at making team. Is Zep going to be in long relief w big club? or back at AAA as starter?
- @cmessina85, going by John Farrell's comments on the pre-game show, it sounds like he is impressed with Reyes' consistant strike throwing ability and his aggressives in the zone...don't think they're thinking about trading him just yet.
- Hey Mike and Gord. Excited for this season?
- @Mark, of course! I've been excited for the upcoming season since the last one ended.
- Mike, where does General Public's "Tenderness" rank in the annals of great 80's songs?
- I got my tickets for Opening night in the mail yesterday- it's also my birthday.
- @Sam, doesn't get much better than listening to the Jays and celebrating your birthday.
- Mike, John Farrell was recently quoted as saying that he and AA had a couple of disagreements on the composition of the roster. Those are obviously bound to happen and I'm not attempting to make an issue of a minor point, but do you know where Farrell and AA might not be completely on the same page?
- @New Brunswicker, unfortunately, I was just informed that Mike doesn't have internet access at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
- Was the grounder off Lawrie's glove one you'd expect a third baseman to get to? Are there worries about Yunel Escobar's defense at all? Just from listening in, seems like he's made quite a few errant throws.
- @Bret, didn't see the Lawrie play, but I don't feel there are many worries about Escobar's defence. Personally, it looks like he tries to be a bit too fancy at times, but i'm sure someone on the coaching staff has talked to him about that.
- So Lawrie didn't make the big play??? Whats wrong with Superman? Thats it, send him down, he's never gonna make it!
- @Opinion8dViewS, proof that he's human.
- Gord, interesting point. Lawrie has also softened his stance on "I'm done with the minors".
- @Mark, Yeah, I think he's starting to realize that it's probably best for the team and himself to get some minor league at-bats this year. As well as he's looked this year, it's still ONLY Spring Training and any stats should be taken with a grain of salt.
- Hey Mike, I am liking the jays line up except for the LF position (Riveira) of course this is when Snider is in Right and Bauttista is at 3rd Base. Now that Podsednik is out for who knows how long, can we expect any moves to get more offence there? OR are you confident in Riveira?
- @The Natural, Mike's internet connection is not working at the moment...personally I dont have any confidence in Rivera's defence but he does have some pop in his bat. Obviously not the long-term solution and I could see him being dealt, possibly by the trade deadline.
- Even if Lawrie doesn't make the squad once he sharpens his skills at 3B and the bat is still going will he be brought up ASAP so that Bauttista can go back to RF?
- I don't think it will be "ASAP," as not to rush the youngster. But, given the fact that Bautista has said he prefers playing in RF opposed to third, I can definately see this as being the long-term plan.
- @InTheWilnerness: Cecil gets DP ball Jones to end 3rd - Cooper saves Escobar with a stretch. Through 3, Cecil has thrown 60 pitches, only 30 strikes
- I'm back online, folks! Lawrie's at the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out.
- C'mon JP. Clear the bases!
- Getting ahead of myself in the lineup. Oops. But hey, might as well predict something.
- how do you think the jays will do this year?
- @BOBTHESHMOB, i think they have a shot at finishing third this year ahead of the O's and Rays.
- Love that the Blue Jays will be stealing more bases this season.
- I think the Jays only have 3 steals from players who will actually go north with the team.
- Mike - how much of this is a mental thing with JP?
- @Gord Brunt, What about the Yankees? Do you think they'll get the wildcard even with a shaky starting rotation?
- How much of what is a mental thing?
- Sorry, Mike, his offensive struggles.
- @BOBTHESHMOB, I do. Despite their shaky starting rotation, I just feel that their offence and bullpen can make up for any starting pitching deficiencies.
- It's Spring Training, it really doesn't matter. His job is to work with the pitchers, learn defense from Wakamatsu, the offense will come - he has always hit.
- This year the AL East does not have a true for sure run away team, Boston is as close as it comes but they have some questin marks in the rotation, thank you Cliff Lee for dissin the Yankees, thank the Rays for cheaping out and letting good guys like Crawford and Pena go and replacing them with a couple of guys on their last legs. Jays with all the question marks we have as good a shot as anyone to make a run maybe not 1st but maybe be in a wild card race
- Mike, since most of us are up in Toronto, and not able to be at Spring Training, perhaps you could tell us, from the bullpen, who has impressed you? Who's been sharp so far?
- They've pitched so few innings, it's tough to say. But Rauck has stood out as having been really good.
- Heard talk of using Molina as a personal catcher for both Drabek and Morrow... Thought they wanted to get away from that as JP could be here for a long time and you'd want to start building that relationship asap...
- Is Garcia even going to make the Yanks rotation?
- @Jeff, Looking at their depth chart, it looks that way. Looks like they're going to go with C.C, A.J., Hughes, Nova and Garcia. They could also go with Mitre and (the resurgent) Bartolo Colon.
- The Natural is right on the money, I personally think the wildcard comes from the central this year, but second in division is real possibility
